Q: why do i always urine at night when sleep. thank you

Dr Kirti Says

Nocturia is a condition in which you wake up several times during the night to urinate.

Due to this symptom there are often disrupted sleeps cycles as the person has to wake up during the night to urinate.

Common causes of this symptom are diabetes, benign prostatic hyperplasia, chronic or repeated urinary tract infections, chronic renal failure, chronic heart failure, cystitis and high blood calcium levels.

Moreover drinking alcohol, caffeinated drinks or too much of fluid before bedtime and some medications like diuretics can cause nocturia.

Sometimes it is seen that obstructive sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders can make you wake up at night and that may cause of going to the toilet. Thus we really have to find out the reason.

For Nocturia I would recommend few tests like blood sugar (glucose), blood urea nitrogen, PSA levels, fluid deprivation, blood serum creatinine or creatinine clearance, serum electrolytes, urinalysis, urine concentration and urine culture to find out the exact cause of the problem.

Moreover record your body weight and start keeping a diary of how much fluid you drink, how often you urinate, and how much you urinate.

Ayurveda talks about the 3 malas (3 waste products) in our body. These are produced by the body and they are urine, faeces and sweat.

As these are waste products they have to be expelled out of the body.

According to Ayurveda the appropriate production and efficient elimination of these is very important for a healthy body.

Ayurveda offers in-depth information regarding the colour, quantity, texture, frequency etc of these malas.

Urine is the waste product that passes through the urinary system and is eliminated out of the body.

Thus if there is any urinary tract infection or any bladder dysfunction it can cause increase or decrease in the amount of urination.

In this case Ayurveda prescribes herbs that work on the urinary system like Shatavari, Boerhavia, Three-Leaf Caper, Tribulus, Guggul, Holy Basil, Amla, Neem, Turmeric, Licorice, Chebulic Myrobalan etc.

These herbs work on the kidneys and help with urine formation, to get rid of the toxins, support the muscles of the urogenital system, work as bladder tonic and help to reduce the inflammation.
